TAIRA-no Kiyomori(1118-1181), the general of samurai, wanted to be
aristocrat after he gained all power.
He expanded Itsukushima Shrine while he was governor of Aki-no-Kuni(*1).
Many buildings were destroyed by fire and rebuilt in 1241. Recently typhoon
and tidal wave (probably because of global warming) often destroyed the
shrine.
There is no original building, but buildings were rebuilt precisely.
Their architectural style is called Shinden -dukuri.

(*1) old name of Hiroshima region. Modern Hiroshima Prefecture consists
of Aki-no-Kuni and Bingo-no-Kuni.
