This is a university library standing on a highway. The drum-like appearance is eye-catching.
The striking feature of this structure is, of course, its round shape.
The round library reminds you of the British Museum Reading Room, which
aimed at making a space of intelligence surrounded by books 360 degrees
around. On the contrary, you do not see books from the center of this library.
The round shape seems to have been chosen to alleviate a sense of pressure
which could have been caused by having a large building on small premises.
Another feature is let the braces seen as they are. These braces are made
of combined 5.5 ton PC units for respective floors.
This is a four storied building. The reading room and book shelves are on the 2nd to 4th floor. When you enter, go through the entrance, climb up the stairs (photo #3), and come in the hall with an atrium (photo #2). It's a far cry from the magnificent architecture like the British Museum but the way the space is handled should be praised, trying to give the library some dignity. |
