This ferroconcrete city-provided housing, facing the Kyobashi-gawa river,
was completed only four years after the A-bombing, when the urban Hiroshima
was obliterated. It enjoyed a lot of attention on completion. The name,
Heiwa Apartment House, reflects the era*. TOHGE Sankichi (1917-1953), known
as an anti-war poet, lived in this apartment.
This apartment house is nearly 60 years old and still in good use. When
it was built, Japan was in the depth of severe inflation, and simple, efficient
design was employed to minimize building costs. Housing complexes in those
days tended to be modeled after the Dohjun-kai Apartment building in Tokyo,
while the Heiwa Apartment House is rather associated with the design employed
for Bauhaus. |
[Footnote]
*Hiroshima citizens in those days tended to use Heiwa (Peace) as a
part of names of many things. This anecdote indicates that scars of war
were still quite raw and tangible for people.
[Notice]
Due respect has to be paid to the residents. See the exterior only.
